Chlorine is a naturally-occurring element; however it is found rarely in nature. Today, it is one of the most commonly manufactured chemicals in the United States because of its many uses and benefits. Chlorine is produced by passing an electric current through salt water, or brine. The electrolysis splits the salt molecule apart and creates chlorine. The co-product of this process creates caustic, which is another salable product Georgia Gulf has in our product portfolio. The majority of the chlorine produced by Georgia Gulf is used internally in the PVC production process.
