Security Code

The security of our facilities is a top priority for Georgia Gulf. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 called attention to the need for unprecedented security measures. Without waiting for government mandates, Georgia Gulf, along with all other Responsible Care® companies, quickly adopted the Responsible Care® Security Code, an aggressive, mandatory facility security program to further protect our chemical facilities, our chemicals transportation systems, our communities and our products.

The Responsible Care® Security Code is widely recognized by the Department of Homeland Security and state and local governments as a model for the chemical industry and other U.S. industries. Under this code, Georgia Gulf conducts comprehensive facility security vulnerability assessments, implements security enhancements, and obtains independent verification of these enhancements.

About Responsible Care ®

Georgia Gulf Corporation's U.S. chemicals operations views the Responsible Care® Managment System (RCMS®) as an umbrella system that encompasses the seven existing Responsible Care Codes of Management Practices.  At Georgia Gulf Corporation's U.S. chemicals operations, existing systems and programs that address environmental, health, safety, and security issues are blended with the Responsible Care® Management System to ensure that Georgia Gulf Corporation's U.S. chemicals operations meets all Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security requirements or concerns.

RCMS® third party certification was obtained for the Georgia Gulf Corporation's U.S. chemicals operations Headquarters on December 15, 2005.  Currently, Georgia Gulf Corporation's U.S. chemicals operations is in the process of seeking RCMS® certification for three of its manufacturing facilities, as per the American Chemistry Council timetables.

Responsible Care® is a global chemical industry performance initiative that is implemented in the United
States through the American Chemistry Council (ACC.)  Since 1998, ACC members have significantly improved their environmental, health, safety, and security performance through this initiative.

Responsible Care® is more than a set of principles and declarations.  It is implementing world-class management systems, verified through independent auditors; tracking performance through established environment, health, safety, and security measures; and extending these best practices to business partners through the industry supply chain.  In the U.S., Responsible Care® has resulted in reduced emissions by 75% and an employee safety that is four and a half times better than the average U.S. manufacturing sector.

Responsible Care® helps America's leading chemical companies go above and beyond government requirements and openly communicate their results to the public.

As part of thier commitment to Responsible Care®, all ACC members have made CEO-level commitments to uphold these program elements:

  • Measuring and publicly reporting performance
  • Implementing the Responsible Care® Security Code
  • Applying the modern Responsible Care® management system to achieve and verify results
  • Obtaining independent certification that a management system is in place and functions according to professional standards

ACC members work with their customers and suppliers to extend the ethic of Responsible Care® to other companies that play a role in the business of chemistry supply chain.  As such, many chemical transporters, distributors, warehouses, and suppliers also fully practice Responsible Care® through ACC's Responsible Care® Partnership Program.

Most recent data demonstrates that Responsible Care® companies have:

  • Achieved a worker safety record four and a half times better than the average of the U.S. manufacturing sector and twice as safe as the business of chemistry overall; safety performance has improved by an additional 16% between 2004 and 2005;
  • Between 2002 and 2003, reduced releases to the environment by 15% and since 1988 have reduced environmental release by more than 77%, while U.S. chemical production has increased by 32%
  • From 2003 to 2004, reduced reportable distribution incidents by 7% while the volume of chemical shipments increased by 2.5%; reduced reportable distribution incidents by 35% since 1995, while the volume of chemical shipments increased 11%
